TERRY JENKINS knows a clinical display is a must when he meets Phil Taylor in the Holsten Premier League Darts on Thursday.
Jenkins got his maiden victory in the tournament last week when he won the final four legs against Roland Scholten to triumph 8-6.
He will take on Phil Taylor - who has never been defeated in the Premier League - on Thursday, and is looking to capitalise on the defending champion's slow start to the tournament, after drawing his first two games.
"I'm looking forward to it and I'm certainly up for it," said Jenkins, the world number eight from Herefordshire.
"You know you have got to play well against Phil, there's nothing else you can do - if you don't you are going to lose.
"In the first week I missed a few silly doubles and did exactly the same in the early part against Roland. I had to make sure I got my doubles back.
"To be honest, I don't practice my doubles. When I practice at home, a few mates come over and I never have any problem with them.
"I concentrate on hitting the 60 and scoring, and I seem to hit the doubles anyway. It's when I have three darts at a double that I seem to struggle, when I have one dart for a hundred-plus finish I seem to get it!
Jenkins trailed Scholten 6-4 in their clash last week, but a superb finish to the game saw him reel off the final four legs without reply to bounce back from an opening defeat to Dennis Priestley.
"I gritted my teeth and was so determined to win, and I think that's what brought me through in the end," he said.
"I didn't want to make the same mistake as I did against Dennis and that made me hit the doubles in the end."
Priestley himself goes into his clash with Scholten on Thursday on a high, following his great start to the Premier League and victory in the PDC's Blue Square UK Open South-West Regional Final at the weekend.
Priestley defeated Jenkins in week one and then drew with Taylor last week, before battling through almost 200 other players to take the £5,000 first prize in Bristol.
"It's been nice to actually get into the Premier League and the main thing it has done is make me practice," said Priestley, 56.
"It's a week-in, week-out tournament and I won't leave the darts alone for days on end like I sometimes do - I'll be practising every day for three months.
"I'm hoping to improve each week and it's good - it's showing in my performances.
"I was ecstatic with how it turned out against Phil last week.
"I went on against a 1/12 favourite, as the bookies made it, and in that aspect I did really well.
"Phil missed some doubles, which is only human, and I capitalised on it."
Priestley sits second behind World Champion Raymond van Barneveld - who has two wins from as many games - as an unbeaten player so far in the Premier League.
"I want to be in that 15th game - the semi-finals in Brighton," added the Yorkshireman.
"I was predicted to be down near the bottom of the Premier League and whether that pans out is anybody's guess.
"My aim is to get into the top four and double my money - people only expected me to have £15,000 (the eighth place prize money) and if I get into the top four it's £30,000 at least.
"The goal is to be in the top four and anything can happen after that."
Van Barneveld meets Peter Manley in Nottingham, and will be out to avenge his defeat to the former Las Vegas Desert Classic champion in the Masters of Darts tournament in Holland last Saturday.
The evening's other game sees young gun Adrian Lewis take on Colin Lloyd, who is the only player without a point following his defeats to Manley and van Barneveld in the opening two weeks.
