New Challenge For Lowe

DARTS legend John Lowe will step into new territory this weekend when he takes part in the qualifiers for the Ladbrokes.com World Championship.

Lowe, the only man to be World Champion in three separate decades, has now dropped out of the top 32 in the world rankings.

That means he has to enter the qualifiers in order to win a place at the Circus Tavern for what would be his 29th success World Championship.

"I've never been in the World Championship qualifiers, I've always qualified on points before," said the 60-year-old from Chesterfield.

"This is the first year I've been out of the 20 or so but it's partly my own fault because I've decided that I can't make all the events.

"So that leaves me in the qualifiers and it's a matter of winning my four games.

"I'm going into it with an open mind. I've been practising all week and I'll get there early, make sure I'm ready and if I'm good enough I'll qualify."

Lowe takes on Mark Stephenson in his first game, while 1983 World Champion Keith Deller is also drawn on board nine.

Other opponents include Dutchman Josephus Schenk, who played in last year's World Championship, and leading duo from the PDC circuit Gary Welding and Eddie Lovely.

"Some of the matches will be harder than in the actual World Championship," he said. "A lot of the players have played in big tournaments.

"Gary Welding can play with the best of them, and there are no guarantees for Keith either because he plays Eddie first, and he is a good player."

Lowe has recently released his autobiography, "Old Stoneface", and he will be signing copies of the book after the qualifiers in Hull.

"The book is selling well," he added.

"I've sold a few hundred myself, apparently a couple of Waterstones stores sold out and I did a signing with [actor and comedian] Ricky Tomlinson recently."
