Wizard Completes Illawarra Double

SIMON WHITLOCK completed another weekend double with victory in the 180Poker.com Open at the Illawarra Yacht Club.

Whitlock followed up Saturday's win over Paul Nicholson in the final of the Tooheys Open to again defeat the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship quarter-finalist.

The duo met in the round robin group stage earlier in the day, with Whitlock winning 3-1, before progressing to the last 16.

There, Whitlock whitewashed Daniel Sim and Matt Kaletta and dropped just one leg in a semi-final win over Bill Aitken.

He then defeated Nicholson 7-2 in the final to complete a quartet of victories over his DPA rival in Illawarra - having also claimed a 13-9 win in Friday's head-to-head.

"It's always great to win these events," said Whitlock, whose lead at the head of the DPA Order of Merit was extended with the two $1,000 victories.

"These events are a credit to the DPA and the quality of players, including the internationals, help us all to improve our game.

"Playing Paul I know I have to be at my best as he will certainly be there to give me a good game."

Nicholson defeated Brit Kevin McDine 6-5 in the semi-finals, but whitewashed both Brian Roach and Jon Bunyard earlier in the knockout stage.

McDine's second semi-final appearance of the weekend continued his good form ahead of next weekend's Australian Open Players Championship.

He won his group and defeated Kiwi pair Preston Ridd and Phillip Hazel - the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship qualifier - in reaching the last four.
