Van Gerwen relishing the 'hunt' at Alexandra Palace

Michael van Gerwen is determined to put a tumultuous year behind him by claiming a landmark fourth Paddy Power World Darts Championship title in January.

No player in this year’s 128-player field has enjoyed more success at Alexandra Palace than Van Gerwen, and the Dutch superstar will be keen to draw upon that experience on his return to the capital.

The three-time World Champion – runner-up to Luke Littler 12 months ago – has endured a testing campaign, despite landing major silverware courtesy of his World Series of Darts Finals triumph in September.

“It’s been a tough year, probably my worst year ever,” revealed a candid Van Gerwen, who will face Japanese debutant Mitsuhiko Tatsunami in Round One.

“There have been a lot of changes in my personal life. You need to try and adjust, but that’s not always easy.

“I have big shoulders and I am facing this situation, and that’s what you have to do if you want to move on.”

For much of the last decade, Van Gerwen has revelled in his role as the sport’s figurehead, although that position has been adopted by Luke Humphries and Littler over the last 24 months.

However, the world number three is determined to use this as motivation, as he sets his sights on lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy for the first time since 2018/19.

“The reality is I’m not the favourite this year,” conceded the 36-year-old, who is currently a 20/1 shot with title sponsor Paddy Power.

“Luke and Luke are playing better than me at the moment, so I have to step up. It’s as simple as that.

“The World Championship is a different animal – the crowds, the stage, the atmosphere, the media attention.

“It is a different type of pressure, and it’s always nice to chase someone. It’s easier than being hunted.

“My game is getting there, but it takes time. Everyone knows where I am coming from.

“As I’ve said before it’s been a really tough period, but I am still a positive man and that is really important.”
