David Munyua has been congratulated on his memorable round one win at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship by the President of Kenya.

Debutant Munyua pulled off one of the biggest shocks in World Championship history by coming from two sets down to defeat Mike De Decker on Thursday.

The 30-year-old now meets either Kevin Doets or Matthew Dennant in round two on Monday, and will return to Ally Pally buoyed by high-profile support in his homeland.

William Samoei Ruto, the President of the Republic of Kenya, has posted a message of support for the country's newest sporting star.

He wrote:
"Congratulations David Munyua on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

"By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history.

"You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage.

"As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home."
