Smiffy Takes Out Walsh

Dennis Smith 2-1 Mark Walsh (3-1, 1-3, 3-1)
Sky Bet World Grand Prix First Round

DENNIS SMITH edged out Mark Walsh 2-1 in the final game of the first round at the Sky Bet World Grand Prix.

Smith reached the last eight at July's World Matchplay, and continued his run in televised events with a defeat of in-form Walsh.

Smith won the opening set 3-1 before Walsh hit back from a leg down in the second with finishes of 110 and 79 to level the match.

Walsh took the first leg of the final set, but Smith proved more clinical on the double to capture the victory.

"I'm quite happy with this and now I'm through I can settle into the longer format on Thursday," said Smith, who faces Ronnie Baxter in Round Two.

"I always knew this would be a hard game. Mark's the man in form at the moment and I knew he would come back at me after that first set.

"It's a quick race to the finish line in the first round but he missed a few doubles and I got there in the end."
