The 2008 Stan James World Matchplay will have an increased prize fund of £300,000, with the champion taking home a record £60,000.

"With England missing out on Euro 2008, the Stan James World Matchplay will be the highlight of the sporting summer," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"The 2007 event was arguably the greatest ever, we had so many tremendous matches throughout the competition and a new champion, in James Wade.

"The World Matchplay at the Winter Gardens is one of the most special occasions in any sport, and I'm sure we will see the arena packed to see the best darts in the world once more next July."

The 32 players for the tournament will come through a new method in 2008, with the top 16 players from the PDC Order of Merit joined by the best 16 non-qualified players from within the Players Championship Order of Merit.

Hearn added: "These changes will reward players for their consistency and success in Players Championships and I'm sure will result in the best field of challengers ever in the Stan James World Matchplay."
