KEVIN McDINE 5-4 CO STOMPE

KEVIN McDINE edged a nine-leg thriller with Co Stompe to pick up his first win of the 2009 PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts in their Group F second match.

The duo battled out a high-quality encounter, with Stompe recording a 103.44 average but missing out in a dramatic deciding leg.

McDine took the opener before Stompe took out 96 in two darts to level, and the pair traded finishes of 87 and 88 respectively in the next two before the Englishman produced the top finish of 170 to lead 3-2.

Stompe replied with an 11-darter, which featured two 180s in six perfect darts, and he also landed a maximum to open leg seven.

However, he missed his chance to break with one dart at double top, with McDine hitting the same bed to hold his lead.

A 13-dart finish from Stompe ensured a decider, but he missed one dart at double 16 for the match and McDine returned to atone for two earlier misses to land double four for the game.

"I'm happy for the win," said McDine, who meets Steve Beaton on Wednesday in his final group game.

"Doubles were the key factor in the end. I gave him a chance in the last leg, but he missed and I took my chance."

Stompe admitted: "Averages don't say everything and if you don't take your chances you don't deserve to win, but that's the standard now."

ANDY HAMILTON 5-2 GARY MAWSON

ANDY HAMILTON reeled off five successive legs to come from 2-0 down and defeat Gary Mawson in their second group game at the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts.

Hamilton missed a host of doubles in his defeat to Robert Thornton on Sunday, but regained his range to keep alive his hopes of securing a last 16 spot.

The 2007 runner-up did take a couple of legs to get into his stride as the American capitalised to lead 2-0, taking out double five for the first leg and then punishing three misses with double nine to win the second.

Hamilton landed double 16 to break throw and get off the mark in the third, and took out double top to level matters.

He hit a 180 and double 16 to move 3-2 up, although Mawson missed one dart at double top to punish three earlier misses from Hamilton in the leg.

A 75 checkout put Hamilton 4-2 up, and he landed a 180 and then double 16 in the next to wrap up the win.

"I started slowly but always believed I would come through eventually," admitted Hamilton, who faces James Wade in Wednesday's final group games.

"I didn't get worried, my scoring was good and then the finishing came too, and that's what wins you games. There's still better to come and it's all on the last game for me now."

DENIS OVENS 5-3 ADRIAN LEWIS

DENIS OVENS kick-started his PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts challenge with a 5-3 win over Adrian Lewis - condemning the youngster to a second successive loss.

Ovens defeated Lewis in last year's group stage in Wolverhampton, and came from 2-0 down to repeat the feat this time.

Lewis landed double top to win the opening leg and punished a host of misses from Ovens to take the second on double eight,

Ovens broke back in the third, and also took the fourth to level, but missed a chance to lead as Lewis posted a 180 and double five to move 3-2 up.

A 106 finish from Ovens saw him break throw, he then took the seventh to lead for the first time before finishing 120 to take the win.

"It's always nice to win," said Ovens. "I took my chances when I got them and I've given myself a good chance now going into the last games."

Lewis admitted: "I was 2-0 up but it should have been one-all and again it wasn't a good enough performance.

"In the last few weeks I've hit a blip and it's not good enough to compete at the top level. I'm disappointed but I've got to get back on the practice board."

TED HANKEY 5-4 WAYNE MARDLE

TED HANKEY edged out Wayne Mardle in a deciding leg to grab a crucial win in Group E of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts.

Hankey, the current BDO World Champion, was jeered during a 5-3 loss to Scott Waites in Sunday's opening fixture, but silenced any critics by taking victory.

He now meets Simon Whitlock in Wednesday's final group games, although will need to improve his finishing after missing almost 30 doubles against Mardle.

Ten missed doubles in the opening leg allowed Mardle to post double four for the lead, and he missed a further four in the next four hitting double top to level.

Scores of 180, 140 and 165 saw him pull clear to win the third before Mardle took the fourth.

The Essex man, though, missed two chances to steal the fifth as Hankey eventually landed double one to lead.

He then broke throw on double ten to move clear at 4-3, although four missed match darts allowed Mardle back in on double top.

Mardle also took the eighth on double seven to force a decider, but Hankey's superior scoring took him to the finish first once again, and this time he held his nerve to post double 16 at the first time of asking.

"I played better than on Sunday but I missed too many doubles," said Hankey. "Wayne came back at me but I've got through it and have a good chance to qualify now."

GARY ANDERSON 5-2 STEVE BEATON

GARY ANDERSON secured his spot in the second round of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts with a 5-2 win over Steve Beaton.

The duo had both won their opening games, but Beaton failed to maintain his good recent form as Anderson capitalised.

Beaton took the opening leg on double eight, but Anderson levelled on double nine and then took out a brace of double top finishes to lead 3-1.

A miss at the same bed gave Beaton a chance in the fifth, which he took on double ten, but Anderson posted a 180 in taking the sixth and then punished three misses from his opponent to seal a 5-2 victory.

"There was a lot of pressure for both of us and I'm really happy to have got the win and qualified," said Anderson.

"Steve didn't score as heavily as he can but I did enough to get through."

JAMES WADE 5-3 ROBERT THORNTON

JAMES WADE produced a sensational performance to defeat Robert Thornton 5-3 in a high-quality encounter at the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts.

Wade produced the highest average of the tournament so far at 108.90 in claiming the victory after trailing 3-0 early on.

Thornton played his part in a thriller, averaging 100 but eventually paying for crucial missed doubles as Wade battled through for the win.

"Even at 3-0 I knew I was playing well," said Wade. "Robert missed an important double at three-all and it went my way after that."

The early stages went the way of Thornton, who took out 84 for the opening leg and produced a ten-dart leg in the second, after hitting seven perfect darts and seeing Wade miss two darts to take the leg himself.

Wade hit three 140s in the third, but double ten saw Thornton move 3-0 up with his opponent averaging 120.

Wade landed 180s in the next two legs to leave 81 after nine darts, taking both to pull back to 3-2 before punishing a missed double top by hitting the same bed to level.

Wade also hit a 180 in the seventh, but wired the bullseye for 121 finish before returning to punish three misses from Thornton to land double ten to break throw and lead for the first time.

He then sealed the win with an 88 finish on double seven to put one foot in the second round, while Thornton must defeat Gary Mawson on Wednesday to progress.

"I missed a double at three-all which cost me," admitted Thornton. "If I play the same way on Wednesday night I should hopefully be okay."

TERRY JENKINS 5-3 DARIN YOUNG

TERRY JENKINS booked his place in the second round of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts with a 5-3 defeat of American Darin Young.

Jenkins followed up Sunday's defeat of Denis Ovens with another solid display, which leaves Young needing to defeat Ovens in their decider on Wednesday.

Jenkins took the opening leg on tops before Young landed a 104 finish to level - only to then miss three darts to break throw in the third.

Jenkins took out double ten to lead 2-1, broke on double top in the fourth and punished further Young misses to lead 4-1.

Young won the next two legs to cut back to 4-3, but Jenkins pulled clear in leg eight and took out double nine to ensure his last 16 place.

"There was a lot of pressure on that game and I'm just happy and relieved to be through," said Jenkins. "I can relax now and look forward to my next game."

SIMON WHITLOCK 5-4 SCOTT WAITES

SIMON WHITLOCK took out a brilliant 142 finish to complete a brilliant comeback from 4-2 down to edge out Scott Waites in a deciding leg and remain unbeaten in Group E.

The Australian put one foot into the second round with a strong performance to follow up Sunday's win over Wayne Mardle with another victory.

Waites played his part in a high-quality game, taking the opening leg with a 76 finish and also leading 4-2, but was denied a match-winning opportunity.

Whitlock took the second and third legs to lead 2-1, only for Waites to take out 106 in levelling, a 14-darter to hit the front and then a 15-dart finish in moving 4-2 up.

A brace of 14-dart finishes from Whitlock secured a deciding leg, and he then took out 142 to seal the win, with Waites waiting on a double.

"I'm delighted to win that," admitted Whitlock. "When I went 4-2 down I wasn't sure I could break Scott's throw twice but I managed to do that.

"I had good memories of the 142 finish after taking it out against Wayne Mardle on Sunday, and I managed to do it again."
