First Speedy Qualifiers Known

BOB CRAWLEY, Alan Casey, Jon Jukes and Gary Ettridge are the first four Speedy Qualifiers for the Speedy Services UK Open.

The quartet won their places in June's televised UK Open finals in Bolton by coming through the free-to-enter Speedy Qualifier held in Brighton.

The two-stage event initially saw players throw 15 darts, and the eight highest totals then played off over a leg of 701 to determine the four qualifiers.

Oxfordshire's Jukes was the highest scorer with an impressive total of 580 from his 15 darts, and he held his nerve to secure a return to the UK Open televised finals, where he competed as an amateur last year in losing to Dave Prins in round one.

Hampshire's Bob Crawley and Middlesex's Alan Casey are also returning to compete in the UK Open, with the latter having reached the last 64 of the 2008 tournament in Bolton, when he won three matches before losing to Jacko Barry.

Crawley, meanwhile, is in line to compete alongside son Jason - who is a professional on the PDC circuit - in the tournament.

A former professional himself, Crawley's qualification is made even more impressive given that he lost part of his index finger in a saw accident last year, meaning that he has had to remodel his throwing action.

"I had to completely start again after the accident," said the 50-year-old from Horndean. "I almost gave up, but to qualify for a tournament like this makes everything worthwhile."

Crawley previously competed in six UK Opens from 2003-2008, reaching the Last 64 in 2005.

Brighton-based Ettridge, 31, will be making his debut in a major tournament when he competes at the UK Open televised finals, which are being held from June 7-10 in the Premier Suite at De Vere Whites, Bolton.

The Speedy Qualifiers are being held throughout April in Speedy stores across the UK, with further events to be staged in Dartford (April 5), Inverness (April 11), Leeds (April 12), Stoke (April 13) and Cardiff (April 19), to be followed by an employee-only event in May in Haydock to determine the final eight players.

Former World Champion Mark Webster - a semi-finalist in the 2011 UK Open - is attending all seven qualifying events in his role as a Speedy Ambassador, and said: "You could see what it mean to the players.

"The standard was far better than I expected and every player had a lot of ability, even the ones not qualifying for the one-off games of 701. There are one or two I would quite like to avoid myself if I'm in the first round with them!"
