DEFENDING HappyBet International Darts Open champion Michael Smith was knocked out by James Wilson in Riesa on Saturday night, as Peter Wright, Dave Chisnall and Jelle Klaasen all enjoyed second round wins in the PDC European Tour event.
Englishman Wilson had knocked out Andy Hamilton in Friday's first round and sent the world number seven crashing out of the £115,000 tournament 24 hours later as he moved into the third round for the second time on the European Tour.
Smith found himself 3-1 down before missing double 12 for a nine-dart finish as he hit back to level at four-all, but crucially missed his chance to lead in leg nine as Wilson took out 101 before sealing the win with a 60 checkout in the tenth.
"He was the defending champion but today it was my day," said Wilson. "It was very tense, we were both scoring well but that 101 probably clinched it.
"He's one of the best players in the world so I'm happy to beat him - we've played a few times and I probably owed him one!"
Wilson now faces Terry Jenkins, who narrowly avoided defeat against Darren Webster as the Norfolk ace missed one match dart in the tenth leg of their thriller as the nine-time major finalist came from 5-3 down to snatch a 6-5 victory.
Dave Chisnall, the runner-up to Michael van Gerwen in last week's TABtouch Perth Darts Masters, came from a leg down against Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena to sweep to a 6-1 triumph as he moved through to the last 16.
Chisnall now faces Andy Boulton, who won the battle of Scottish-based Englishmen with Alan Norris, dropping only one leg as he moved through to Sunday's third round.
World number ten Jelle Klaasen overcame emerging youngster Chris Dobey 6-3 in a fast-paced contest as he moved through to meet Mensur Suljovic, who ended the hopes of Germany's Mike Holz with a 6-3 triumph.
Peter Wright defeated Steve West 6-4 in a hard-fought contest, with the UK Qualifier missing five darts to force a deciding leg before the world number five finally closed out victory.
Wright now plays Simon Whitlock, with the Australian racing to a 6-1 win over South Africa's Devon Petersen, for whom a 100 finish was the highlight before the former European Champion claimed five successive legs for the triumph.
Benito van de Pas survived two missed match darts from Kyle Anderson as he progressed to the last 16 with a narrow 6-5 win over the Australian, who led 5-3 and hit five 180s but was unable to close out the win.
Van de Pas now meets Robert Thornton, the 2015 European Darts Open winner who enjoyed a 6-4 comeback win over Belgian qualifier Ronny Huybrechts.
Home hopes rest with Dragutin Horvat, who thrilled the German crowd with a narrow 6-5 win over Gerwyn Price in a high-quality encounter, despite finding himself 2-0 down early on.
The Croatian-born ace recovered to lead 4-2 and 5-3 before Price forced a decider, but the Welshman missed one match dart before seeing Horvat land double 16 for the win.
Horvat now meets Ian White, who hit four 180s in a strong display to defeat Jim Walker 6-2, while Robbie Green also impressed as he overcame Merseyside rival Stephen Bunting 6-1 with a superb performance, hitting three 180s, six doubles from 11 attempts and averaging over 101.
Green now plays Kim Huybrechts, who produced the day's highest average of 104.55 as he edged out Joe Cullen 6-5 in a thrilling contest, with the Belgian coming from 5-4 down to claim victory.
The third round will begin on Sunday afternoon with the clash between 20-year-old European Tour debutant Ryan Meikle and Dutch newcomer Yordi Meeuwisse, who received second round byes after their scheduled opponents - Michael van Gerwen and Daryl Gurney - withdrew through injury.
The afternoon session's third round will be followed by the conclusion of the £115,000 tournament in the evening session, which features the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
