Barney: I'll Get Better!

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD feels that he can improve his performance, as he prepares for an all-Dutch clash in this week's Holsten Premier League Darts.

The four-time World Champion has made a brilliant start to life in the PDC with two wins in his opening Premier League games, against Ronnie Baxter and Wayne Mardle.

He has averaged 99 and 100 in those matches, but told planetdarts.tv: "I can play better.

"I had a 105 average in the Bavaria (World Darts Trophy) a few years ago. Those were my better days and I've got to get those averages again - I will need them against Phil Taylor.

"But this is unbelievable for me, playing in the Premier League is a nice feeling,

"I'm relaxed and everyone is nice to me. When I am in the practice room there is a lot of humour and the players make me feel like I am home.

"They are very nice to me and I'm relaxed, and if you are relaxed and you don't have problems this is what can happen."

Barneveld also claimed the £1,000 added prize for the highest checkout at Sunderland last Thursday - his 164 coming among five ton-plus finishes.

"I'm not really a ton-plus finisher so I couldn't believe it!" he added.

"I've played two top players so far and, when you hit five-ton plus finishes, your opponent can't do much about that.

"I missed two darts in the second leg at double 16 and Wayne took took it, but then suddenly I hit the 164 finish and a 126 and was 3-2 up.

"He had a good leg to go 3-3 into the break but then I hit 120 and 116 and they went in. I couldn't believe myself - I normally need three extra darts!"

Barneveld takes on fellow countryman Roland Scholten in one of Thursday's four clashes at Aberdeen's AECC.

"We're both from The Hague and I'm looking forward to that one," he said.

"The last time we played was last year in the Masters of Darts in Hengelo. I won 4-2 in sets I think, but he played okay and he made it to the semi-finals there.

"People underestimate him, he's a fantastic player and a nice person. He has travelled the world for years and is always in the top four of the rankings."

Barneveld was also quick to praise the reception he has received from fans at Blackburn and Sunderland on his two Premier League appearances to date.

"When I came up in Blackburn everyone was cheering Ronnie because it's his home town but in Sunderland they were cheering for Barney," he said.

"I couldn't believe it because I don't even get that in Holland at the moment!

"I enjoyed myself and thought when I came off 'this is where I want to be every week'.

"I'm a very proud man and lucky to play in the Premier League."
