BELGIAN Erik Clarys battled past the challenge of Barbados qualifier Winston Cadogan to reach round two at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Clarys set up a second round meeting with Wayne Mardle thanks to a solid display against the Purfleet debutant.

Cadogan defied nerves on his first appearance in front of the television cameras to lead 1-0 and 2-1 in the first set and threaten a shock.

Clarys hit back to take the set, and won the second 3-0 to put himself in pole position.

The Belgian number one almost wrapped up the win with a 170 checkout, missing the bull, but he had enough of a cushion to land double six and progress.

"It was a very hard first game," said Clarys. "I haven't ever seen him play before so I didn't know what to expect.

"But winning is the only thing that counts and I did that.

"I play Wayne Mardle in the next round and that will be tough but we'll see on the day how I perform.

"I'm going home for Christmas now - this was the first time my wife and children haven't been here to support me but they will be back for the next round."

Cadogan, the Caribbean and South American Masters champion, admitted: "It was a great experience.

"I've heard so much about it and seen it, but once you get up there it is so different.

"I'm hoping to learn from this and and qualify again to show people my potential."
