Four In A Row For Taylor

PHIL TAYLOR defeated Denis Ovens 4-1 to take victory in the inaugural PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship.

The 13-time World Champion made it four successive victories inside a month with an imperious display in the final, hitting six 180s and averaging over 105.

Taylor claimed two Players Championship wins in Holland during November and then swept aside the field at the PartyBets.com Grand Slam of Darts last week.

He came from a set down in the final to defeat Ovens by winning eight of the final ten legs, showing superb scoring with six 180s and unerring accuracy on treble 19.

Taylor opened the game with a 180 and took the opening leg before Ovens hit back to take the next two for the first set.

Ovens also had his chances in the second set, missing single 14 which would have left the bullseye in the opening leg and double 12 for a 98 finish in the second; Taylor inevitably on hand to mop up with a 104 checkout and double 16 finish.

Taylor took the third set in a deciding leg, with scores of 137 and 174 setting him up, although Ovens took out a fine 124 on double 11 to lead in set four.

But any hopes he had of squaring the game were crushed by Taylor, who landed near-identical back-to-back 11 darters to move 3-1 up.

The pair traded maximums in the opening leg of set five, but a missed double 12 from Ovens allowed Taylor in to land double top.

Ovens kicked off the next leg with scores of 100 and 180, with Taylor's first throw of 42 leaving him trailing.

A sixth 180 of the game, followed by a 139 score saw Taylor claw his way back into the leg, and he stepped in following two misses at double 18 from Ovens to seal a superb win on double top.

"I'm over the moon," said Taylor. "It's a very emotional win because that is four tournaments I've won in a row now.

"It's the ideal preparation for the World Championship and I'm delighted.

"It's always nice to win new tournaments, and the standard here was superb."

Taylor won his semi-final against Mark Walsh by the same 4-1 scoreline, taking six of the last seven legs in clinical fashion to follow up a brilliant 3-0 quarter-final win over Wayne Mardle.

Ovens overcame Colin Lloyd and Roland Scholten on Sunday to reach the final, with Scholten a 3-1 winner against Raymond van Barneveld in the last eight.

Van Barneveld and Jason Clark had hit nine-darters on the event's opening day, while Kevin McDine continued to develop his growing reputation by reaching the last eight, where he went down to Walsh.

Coverage of the PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship will be screened on DSF on Sunday 16 December.

QUARTER-FINALS
PHIL TAYLOR 3-0 WAYNE MARDLE

Phil Taylor dropped just one leg against Wayne Mardle to book his place in the semi-finals with a 3-0 victory.

Taylor took the opening set swiftly, winning the first leg on double six after a 177 scoreline left him on a double, before following that with a 13-darter to win leg two.

Mardle responded with a 136 finish to take the opening leg of the second set, only for a 98 checkout from Taylor to level matters before the 13-time World Champion took the set on double two.

Taylor landed double 15 to win the third set's opener, and despite a maximum from Mardle was too strong in the next, taking out double ten for the match.

MARK WALSH 3-1 KEVIN McDINE
Mark Walsh set up a semi-final against Phil Taylor with a 3-1 victory against Kevin McDine.

Walsh took the first set in straight legs, punishing missed doubles from McDine in the opening leg and then taking out double 16 after a 174 scoreline set up the double.

McDine responded to take the second set without reply on double 16 and double eight, and landed a 180 and an 83 finish to lead in the third set.

Walsh responded with a 106 finish and a 180 gave him the advantage to win the decider and edge in front.

Another maximum from Walsh left him on a double to take the fourth set's opener, and he sealed the win on double top.

ROLAND SCHOLTEN 3-1 RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD
Roland Scholten progressed to the semi-finals with a stylish 3-1 defeat of World Champion Raymond van Barneveld.

Van Barneveld had hit a nine-darter in Saturday's early rounds, but never recaptured that form and paid for a string of missed doubles against his compatriot.

Scholten edged the first set 2-1, taking out a 14-darter in the deciding leg, and then doubled his lead by winning set two without reply, punishing nine misses from van Barneveld to move 2-0 up.

A 13-darter put  Scholten ahead in the next, only for van Barneveld to hit back with two maximums in taking the next two legs to win the set.

But three misses at double 18 cost van Barneveld in the fourth set's opener, and Scholten landed double top in the next leg to seal the win.

DENIS OVENS 3-1 COLIN LLOYD
Denis Ovens came a set down to defeat Colin Lloyd 3-1 and move into the semi-finals of the PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship.

Lloyd took the game's first set 2-1, with Ovens opening on double top before a 101 finish saw Lloyd level before he took out double four for the set.

Lloyd also took out 120 to level in the second set, but a 96 finish on double 18 in the decider saw Ovens square the game.

Ovens also edged set three, hitting two 180s and taking out double top in the decider after Lloyd had taken leg two with a 107 checkout.

Lloyd paid for missed doubles in the fourth set's opener, and an 88 finish on double seven gave Ovens the win.

SEMI-FINALS
PHIL TAYLOR 4-1 MARK WALSH

Phil Taylor produced a brilliant display to defeat Mark Walsh 4-1 with a 105 average to move into the final of the PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship.

Taylor edged a scrappy opening set 2-1, coming from a leg down before winning the decider on double one.

Walsh hit back with two maximums in the second set, with one 180 in each leg from Taylor not enough as Walsh took out a 13-darter in the decider.

Taylor, though, lifted a gear to take six of the next seven legs in 12, 14, 15, 12, 14 and 14 and progress.

A 90 checkout on double ten and then a double eight finish - after he opened with scores of 180 and 177 for six perfect darts - gave Taylor set three, and he also took the fourth without reply.

Taylor kicked off the fifth set with another 180 and a 14-darter before Walsh replied with a superb 12-darter of his own to level.

But Taylor hit a sixth 180 of the game in the next, before taking out double eight for the win.

DENIS OVENS 4-1 ROLAND SCHOLTEN
Denis Ovens won a place in the final of the PartyPoker.net German Darts Championship with a 4-1 defeat of Roland Scholten.

A tight contest saw the first four sets all go to a deciding third leg before Ovens took the fifth 2-0 to book his spot against Phil Taylor.

Ovens came from a leg down to win the opening set, following up an 88 finish with a 12-darter to move 1-0 up.

Scholten took the second in the same manner, coming from 1-0 down to take out double 14 and level and then 86 for the set.

Scholten, however, paid for five missed doubles in the next as Ovens sneaked the decider on double two.

A 96 finish on double eight saw Ovens steal the fourth set's opener, and he took out 100 in two darts in the third leg to move 3-1 up.

It proved a hammer blow as Ovens, who hit five 180s in the game, took the next two legs without reply from Scholten to complete the win.
