Peperami Gibraltar Darts Trophy Third Round

DARTS' top names stepped up the pace in the hunt for the Peperami Gibraltar Darts Trophy title on Sunday afternoon as Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, Dave Chisnall and Ian White impressed alongside Gibraltar's Dyson Parody in round three.

A raft of ton-plus averages were produced as the final day of the £115,000 tournament kicked off with the last 16 taking to the stage at the Victoria Stadium.

World number one van Gerwen kicked off the day's action with a brilliant 105.73 average to Mervyn King's 101 average as the Dutchman recorded a 6-3 victory.

Van Gerwen now meets Gibraltar's Dyson Parody - the only remaining home player of the four local qualifiers - in the quarter-finals after the World Cup representative prevailed 6-4 against German teenager Max Hopp in a see-saw contest.

The win means that Parody becomes the first Gibraltarian to reach a European Tour quarter-final, continuing his run of success this weekend after also defeating two other Dutchman, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jelle Klaasen, on his way to the last eight.

World Champion Gary Anderson defied a ten-dart finish from James Wade in his 6-2 win over the 2014 Gibraltar Darts Trophy champion, with the Scot averaging an impressive 104.73 and finishing 121 and 98 on his way to victory.

Anderson now faces Belgium's Kim Huybrechts, who booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 victory over Benito van de Pas which was sealed with a 120 checkout.

Number two seed Peter Wright overcame Simon Whitlock 6-2, despite four 180s from the Australian, and now faces Ian White, who recorded an outstanding 107.33 average in his impressive 6-2 win over Joe Murnan.

Dave Chisnall hit the afternoon's highest average of 110.58 and took out a 146 checkout before edging out Robert Thornton 6-5 in an 11-leg thriller, in which the reigning World Grand Prix champion finished 154 and averaged 102.54 in reply.

Austria's Mensur Suljovic pulled clear from three-all to win 6-3 against former World Youth Champion Michael Smith in another game where both players recorded ton-plus averages, setting himself up for a clash with Chisnall.

Sunday evening sees the tournament conclude, with the quarter-finals followed by the semi-finals and final as the remaining eight players battle for the £25,000 first prize.
