MATT CLARK overcame a bout of 'flu and Canadian Ken Woods to move into the second round of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

Clark has spent the past fortnight laid low at his home in Kent, but he defied the lack of practice to end the qualifier's hopes with a comfortable win.

After working his way up the world rankings to reach the top 32 and earn a Purfleet debut, Clark was in determined mood early on.

He won the opening set 3-1 and repeated that in the second to double his advantage.

While Woods won the opening leg of the third set, Clark responded with three of his own to seal the win.

"I've been in bed with the 'flu and I'm not 100% again yet," admitted Clark.

"For the past two weeks I've hardly thrown a dart and I wanted to perform better than that, but I'm very happy to be through.

"Thankfully Ken missed a few doubles and I hit mine.

"The heat on stage is the same for everybody but, after the 'flu, it affected me more than I thought it would."

Clark takes on 12 time World Champion Phil Taylor in his next game, and he added: "I'm going to try my hardest and hope he misses!

"I don't look at the other opponents' scores anyway if I can help it, I just look at the floor because some players have tactics and that makes them irrelevant.

"Phil is the best darts player in the world, but if he has a bad day and I have a good day I could beat him. I'll try 110 per cent to beat him and who knows."
