Jones Continuing Good Form

WAYNE JONES is hoping that his improved run of form in televised events will continue apace at the Bodog.com World Grand Prix.

Jones has established himself as one of the circuit's most consistent 'floor' players in recent years with his displays in the PDC ProTour events around the world.

However, he has overcome his previous nerves on stage this year with some fine displays, culminating in a quarter-final appearance in the World Matchplay in July which was followed a week later by him reaching his first major PDC final at the European Championship.

The Wolverhampton man takes on Steve Brown in the second round of the World Grand Prix on Wednesday night, and is hoping to prove that his summer form was not a one-off.

"I had my chances to get beyond the quarter-finals in the World Matchplay and I felt I played brilliantly there - possibly better than in the European Championship," said Jones, who defeated Mervyn King 2-1 in round one.

"My floor game has sort-of gone onto the stage and apart from the silly fives and ones I'm really pleased with the way I'm throwing, and to beat me somebody's got to play well."

Brown booked his place in the second round with a win over Steve Farmer on Monday night, and Jones is expecting a tough task against the emerging star from Bristol.

"I know Steve Farmer really well and felt it would be close between him and Steve," added Jones. "Steve's a brilliant player and he beat me the last time we played.

"Steve's been around for a few years now and it was always going to be a matter of time before he started to do it on the big stage, which he is doing now.

"He's pumped up but that will suit me fine on Wednesday and I'll be ready for him.

"If I finish like I did in the first round and put my scoring right then I'll be pleased. It's a longer game and I'm looking forward to it."
